San Sebastian, or "Donostia" in Basque, is an elegant city hugging the La Concha bay and backed by verdant rolling hills. It has long been a preferred destination by both Spaniards and international visitors alike, especially during summer time, when the city's comfortably warm summers are a welcome refuge from the intense heat of southern and central Spain.
Its role as a place to "summer" has yielded a rather fashionable air thanks to beach promenades, chic shops and classy restaurants. Nevertheless, its traditional Old Quarter is every bit as cramped, lively and picturesque as ever. Situated on an eastern ridge and backed by the slopes of Monte Urgull, this centuries-old historic part of town is packed with Gothic churches and Baroque façades, atmospheric bars and restaurants, cobblestone streets and inviting squares, historic buildings and one-of-a-kind shops. Don't pass up the chance to hike up to the top of Monte Urgull, an incredible vantage point offering panoramic views over the sea, bay and city.
