You probably know that “Happy birthday” in Spanish is “Cumpleaños feliz” or “Feliz cumpleaños” and that there is also a popular song that is sung at all birthday celebrations to congratulate people.

The Spanish version of Happy Birthday to You is called “Cumpleaños feliz” and is one of the most famous songs in the world. It is used to celebrate a person's birthday and comes from a song called Good Morning to All, which was written in English by Mildred J. Hill and Patty Hill in 1893. This song was intended for children in school and to greet students.

The song Good Morning to All goes:

Good morning to you,

Good morning to you,

Good morning, dear children,

Good morning to all.

Thus, over time, Good Morning to All became what we now know as the Happy Birthday song, as it became popular and was translated into several languages. Today, it is sung at birthday celebrations in many countries and cultures.

This version of the song was formally registered in 1935 by Warner/Chappell in the United States, which meant that for decades its commercial use required a license. According to US law, copyrights from that period should expire around 2030, while in Europe protection was based on the death of the author, meaning they would have expired around 2016.

However, in 2015, a US judge ruled that the 1935 rights protected only a specific arrangement of the song, and not the original melody or lyrics. As a result, since then, the song Happy Birthday has been considered in the public domain, allowing it to be sung or used freely, although certain recordings or specific arrangements may still be protected.

On the other hand, in Mexico, they sing a traditional birthday song called Las mañanitas. The lyrics go like this:

Hoy por ser día de tu santo

Te venimos a cantar

Qué linda está la mañana

En vengo a saludarte

Venimos todos con gusto

Y placer a felicitarte

El día en que tú naciste

Nacieron todas las flores

Y en la pila del bautismo

Cantaron los ruiseñores

Ya viene amaneciendo

Ya la luz del día nos dio

Levántate de mañana

Mira que ya amaneció

De las estrellas del cielo

Tengo que bajarte dos

Una para saludarte

Y otra para decirte adiós

Volaron cuatro palomas

Por toditas las ciudades

Hoy por ser día de tu santo

Te deseamos felicidades

Con jazmines y flores

Hoy te vengo a saludar

Hoy por ser día de tu santo

Te venimos a cantar

Estas son las mañanitas

Que cantaba el Rey David

Hoy por ser día de tu santo

Te las cantamos a ti

Despierta mi bien despierta

Mira que ya amaneció

Ya los pajarillos cantan

La luna ya se metió

In addition to the typical Happy Birthday song, there are other traditions that do not exist in Anglo-Saxon culture. In Spain and Argentina, it is very common to pull the birthday boy or girl's ears. Friends and family members pull the birthday boy or girl's ears as many times as their age.

Another tradition in Spain is that the birthday boy or girl pays for the food or drink if they celebrate their birthday away from home with friends or family.
