Located in the heart of the northwestern region of Asturias, Oviedo is a medium-sized city of roughly 221,000 inhabitants that offers beautiful surroundings, a great nightlife and more historical monuments than you'll know what to do with.
Centuries ago, Oviedo was the capital of the proud but small medieval kingdom of Asturias, one of the few parts of Spain to hold out against the powerful Muslim Empire that occupied Spain for hundreds of years. Completely isolated from the rest of Christian Europe, Asturias was left to develop its own unique style of architecture. You can see many of the best examples of this pre-Romanesque, considered the Spanish precursor to the later Romanesque and Gothic styles, in and around Oviedo. Prime examples dating back to the 8th and 9th centuries include the Santa María de Naranco Church, the Foncalada Fountain, the San Miguel de Lillo Church and the San Vicente Monastery.
You'll find the bulk of Oviedo's historic sites within its atmospheric Casco Antiguo (Old Quarter), with highlights including a Gothic cathedral, numerous Renaissance noble palaces, elegant chapels and convents spanning the centuries and much more. The Old Quarter is also the social heart of Oviedo, teeming with throngs of people having fun day and night and enjoying the city's squares, shops, restaurants and, of course, sidrerías (cider bars). A trip to Oviedo is simply not complete until you spend a night pouring and drinking cider - Asturias' alcoholic beverage of choice - at a few sidrerías. It's a rowdy, messy process and you're bound to be splashed by a bit of cider as it's poured from high above the head; it's for this very reason that you'll generally notice that sawdust covers the floors.
