Spanish is gaining ground in New York

Time Square, New York during daytime

Spanish is becoming an increasingly popular language, and more and more cities are speaking it each month. It is currently gaining ground in New York.

A few days ago, we gave you several facts that made it clear that Spanish is an increasingly popular language; but there is nothing like hearing headlines like this: that in a prominent city like New York, the majority of its students choose Spanish as the language to learn.

What is the reason? According to the New York City Department of Education, most of these students are descendants of Latinos who wish to know the language of their parents and grandparents; but there is also a significant increase in students of Anglo-Saxon origin whose parents are aware of the importance and strength of our language in fields such as economics.

For people like Carmen Fariña, the daughter of Spaniards and Chancellor of the New York City Department of Education; or Milady Báez, of Dominican origin and head of the city's bilingual education program, this is a great step forward. Spanish has gone from being a marginal language in New York to an important one with an increasing presence in various institutions. Specifically, Báez mentions that knowing it has gone from being a reason for hesitation to a source of pride.

New York opens its doors to Spanish, a language of the future and for the future.
