Getxo International Paella Competition

Why is the international paella cooking competition held in Getxo, which is in the Basque Country?
Paella is, as you know, that traditional dish based on rice and various ingredients, a representative of the Mediterranean diet and the pride of the Valencian Community.
Why, then, is the international competition for making this specialty held in Getxo, which is in the Basque Country on the banks of the Bilbao Estuary? First, let's consider that it is a relatively easy dish to prepare—though it has "its own science"—and that until recently, preparing a paella was for any Spaniard what organizing a barbecue is for an American: a social act more than a regional one.
With that philosophy, four friends from Getxo organized a small competition back in 1956 on a plot of land near a soccer field. That year barely 20 people gathered, but the idea was a hit, and the following year more people came, and the year after that even more... and currently, more than 30,000 people, including attendees and participants, punctually dedicate July 25th to feasting on paella.
What most catches the eye of someone visiting the competition for the first time is, in addition to the variety, the presentation of the dishes. Some competing groups create true dioramas that include elements of Basque culture, while others use the paella ingredients themselves to give it a grand appearance. Everything is important in this contest: aesthetics, flavor, dedication, enthusiasm...
But it’s not all about the competition; the event also features activities such as workshops for children and dance performances. A good dose of movement to walk off the rice after a wonderful feast.
So, as you can imagine, everyone leaves satisfied from this celebration: good food, great mood, and an incredible party. Where are you going to be next July 25th?
