Puerto Vallarta Attractions & Highlights
Set on the shoreline of one of the world's largest bays, the 24 kilometer Bahía de Banderas, Puerto Vallarta has easy access to a huge selection of paradisaical beaches.
With lovely views of the wide bay, this seaside promenade is by far one of Puerto Vallarta's favorite spots. Visitors and locals alike make their way here during the evening for a relaxing stroll between palm trees and funky sculptures and to catch a glimpse of the spectacular sunset.
Puerto Vallarta's historic quarter, which spans the Zona Romántica and Downtown sections of town, is a delightful area of cobblestone streets, colorful potted flowers and stucco houses dating back to the city's history as a small sea town.
Puerto Vallarta was a relatively unknown destination until the 1960's, when paparazzi descended upon the city to follow the dramatic affair between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, who was starring in the film The Night of the Iguana. In the end, Burton purchased two houses - one for him and one for Elizabeth Taylor - directly across the street from each other and added an elegant pink bridge to connect the two.
Templo de Guadalupe
This elegant church with its trademark crown-topped steeple was built in the first half of the 20th century at the center of town. In its beautifully adorned interior you'll find a massive dome, sculptures, murals and hand-crafted columns and moldings.
