Latin American Dance
Language Resources

In Latin America, you will, no doubt, find a wide variety of culturally enriched dances that reflect the origins of its people. Music is very important as a mode of expression here, and of course there is nothing to do with that music but to enjoy it by dancing! The energetic dances – full of color and excitement – can be seen in festivals throughout the year with massive crowds waiting to see them when professional dancers are involved, who will have trained for most if not all of their lives in order to reach a level of proficiency which allows them to perform such strong and recognisable dances without any hesitation. Stemming from Haiti, Cuba, Trinidad and the Dominican Republic, just to name a few, each offers its own qualities and even its own tempo, such that, once you nail those basic steps down, you will not be able to control yourself, or, rather, your feet! You will be tapping along before you know it, and once you catch the bug and start dancing lessons you may find that you never want to stop. So, now that we have caught your attention, why not check out the sections below and learn more about popular Latin American dance and music to see all of the different varieties which are out there for you to witness and even try out for yourself.

All of us, without exception, have gotten out on the floor and danced some form of Latin American dance at some point in our lives, even if we did not perhaps realise that this was the case and even if it was only for a brief moment. Who has not moved to the lively sounds of salsa or mambo from time to time, whether at a party, an event, or just a local club? Latin dance inspires cultural sentiment that is nearly impossible to resist with its vitality, joy, and even sadness, and this is one of the reasons why it has often spread to other forms of popular music to form a motif or offer up a tune for the singer to use! Many songs which have become popular in the US or Europe have been based around these melodies and tempos. Watching couples dance tango is a hypnotizing experiencing, just for an example, and when you see the real professionals start to move in a performance piece you will see why it is just so well loved.
