With a fabulous nightlife zone, a multi-faceted cultural scene, a history that dates back to the Romans and a a beautiful old medieval quarter, León is a small city (population approx. 165,000) with big appeal.
The city's Gothic cathedral, built in the 13th century, is in the heart of the medieval Old Quarter. With soaring ceilings, dramatic spires and immense stained glass windows, it's truly a must-see on any trip to León. Nearby is the equally impressive Basílica de San Isidoro, an 11th century Romanesque church where you can check out the tombs of the Kings of León as well as one of the finest collections of Romanesque paintings. Keep exploring the old city streets and you'll discover all sorts of centuries-old buildings, a large portion of the medieval walls and even remains of the original Roman walls.
However, León hardly lives in the past. 13,000 lively university students keep the vibe youthful and ensure a fun nightlife scene, while avant-garde constructions like Antoni Gaudí's Moderniste-style "Casa de los Botines" and a colorfully funky Museum of Contemporary Art (MUSAC) add a "new edge" to the historic city.
Another highlight of the Old Quarter is what's known as the "Barrio Húmedo" (Wet Quarter). This section of historic León, located south of the Cathedral, is the hub of the city's nightlife as well as the heart of its famous tapas culture; with its winding medieval streets packed with bars, it's a fantastic part of town for a pub crawl.
